So, grab your four-legged friend, and let's get started!

The History of The Snood

Snoods have been around for a long time, with the earliest versions dating back to the 16th century! They were initially worn as a fashionable head covering and typically seen on wealthier members of society in Europe, particularly those of Scotland and England. In the 19th century, the snood was adopted to keep the wearer's hair in place and keep their neck warm during cold weather. In the mid-20th century, it came back into fashion in Europe but has since found global admiration. Today, snoods come in endless styles and materials and are a popular accessory for any outfit.

But snoods weren't always for people. Our fluffy friends needed snoods too! In the 16th century, these types of accessories began to be used more widely on dogs to keep their ears and hair out of their eyes and protect their fur from dirt and debris. Originally, snoods were only worn by longhaired breeds such as Afghans and Maltese. Today, they are used to give dogs a fashionable look while keeping them cool in warmer temperatures.

What Is a Crochet Snood?

A crochet snood is a small hood designed to cover a dog's head and neck. It is similar to a scarf or cowl in style but allows full head and neck coverage. The snood is designed to keep a pup's ears, mane and face cozy and warm. It is also a great way to keep long fur out of their face.
They are made from soft acrylic yarn, which keeps your pup's ears and neck warm and protected.

In recent years, crochet snoods have become increasingly popular among dog owners. These handmade snoods are often made in various designs and patterns and are considered fashionable dog accessories. They are also considered to be more eco-friendly and sustainable than mass-produced snoods.

When selecting a crochet snood, it is essential to get the right size. Generally, snoods should fit comfortably within the collar of your dog's neck and be adjusted so that it's neither too tight nor too loose. However, not all sizes of crochet snoods are created equal, so it's best to measure your pup's neck size before selecting your crochet snood.

Plus, the snoods are adjustable for a secure and comfortable fit, so you can be sure that your pup is always warm and cozy.

What Are the Benefits of a Snood?

Crochet snoods offer a variety of benefits for both dogs and their owners. From providing warmth and protection from the elements to adding a personality to your dog's appearance, snoods can be a great addition to any dog's wardrobe.

Whether you're a new dog owner or a seasoned pro, you'll learn how snoods can be a valuable accessory for your furry companion.

Let's go over the many benefits of snoods for dogs:

Slight compression and covers dogs' ears

Snoods provide a slight compression effect, which can help to keep dogs calm and relaxed. This is especially useful for dogs anxious or sensitive to loud noises. The snood covers the ears, protecting them from loud sounds and helping to keep dogs calm. This is because the snood's gentle pressure can help release endorphins, which are natural chemicals that can reduce anxiety.

The snood is easy to slip on and take off, making it ideal for when you know your pup might feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable due to his environment. Taking him for a walk along a noisy street or a park full of children running around can be stressful for pets. With the protection of a snood, you can help your pup remain calm and relaxed in these situations.

It's also a great alternative to hard-shelled noise-canceling headgear, which can be expensive and cumbersome. Plus, snoods come in all sorts of stylish designs, so they help keep anxious and sensitive pups calm and look cool at the same time!

Made of Knit

Knitted material is the way to go if you're looking for a lightweight, comfortable, breathable snood that your pup will love wearing. This friendly material is designed to keep your dog's fur healthy and moisture-free while providing the perfect fit and remaining securely in place.

This material is also breathable, allowing for proper ventilation, and does not cause discomfort to the dog's skin. The knit fabric is also stretchy, which allows for a snug fit, ensuring that the snood stays in place and does not shift around.

Keeps Your Dogs Ears Clean

Do you have a pup with long, floppy ears? Is mealtime quickly turning into an ear-grooming sesh? We hear you! Our pooches love to get into everything – including their food – and long ears can often take the biggest beating.

But that's why snoods are your friend! A snood is a fabric or sweater-like tube that you can slip over your pup's ears, effectively keeping them out of the food and out of harm's way. The best part? Snoods can help reduce the required grooming and clean your furry friend's ears. It's a win-win for everyone!

Snoods are especially useful for breeds with longer ears, like spaniels, hounds, and some retrievers, prone to getting their ears dirty and soiled during mealtime. Plus, it's also a great way to keep any fur from getting in your pup's food.

Besides, your pup will look so cute sporting their snood at mealtime!

Protects dog’s ears from infections

As a dog owner, it's crucial to ensure your furry companion's well-being, including protecting their ears. Regular ear inspections for wax buildup and external parasites are essential, but there's another way to safeguard your pup's ears - by using a snood!

These handy accessories provide an added layer of protection, keeping your dog's ears safe from dirt, dust, and snow. Whether your pup is an active dog who loves spending time outdoors or is prone to getting ear infections, a snood is an excellent way to keep them dry, comfortable, and protected from the elements.

Give Your Dog a Touch of Personality

If you're looking for a way to add style and personality to your pup's look, you may want to consider getting them a snood. Not only do they provide a functional benefit (keeping their ears and neck warm) but they can also add some serious cuteness and style to your pup's look.

You can find snoods in various colors, sizes, and patterns, making it easy to find one that perfectly matches your pup's coat and personality. Whether you prefer a vibrant, colorful look or something more subtle and classic, there's sure to be the perfect snood for your pup.

No matter what color, pattern, or size you choose for your pup's snood, you can be sure that it'll make them look adorable.

Step by Step Guide To Getting Your Dog to Wear a Crochet Snood

Welcome to your step-by-step guide to getting your dog to wear a crochet snood! Let's start at step one!

  • Gather or bunch up the snood like a sock, making it easy to place it over your dog's snout first
  • This step is crucial because it makes it easier to put the snood on your dog's head and makes it less intimidating. By bunching up the snood, you are making it more of a soft, flexible object for your dog to get used to.

  • Show your dog a treat through the snood
  • Doing this step allows your dog to associate the snood with something positive, which is the treat. By showing your dog the treat through the snood, you are giving them a visual cue that the snood is not something to be feared but something that brings good things.

  • Place the treat on the floor in between the snood and your dog
  • This allows your dog to have control over the situation. By placing the treat on the floor, your dog can decide whether or not they want to go near the snood. It also allows you to observe their behavior and reactions without forcing them to interact with the snood.

  • Cover the treat with a snood from a distance so your dog can't reach it without inserting her head into the snood
  • This step is crucial as it eases the process of familiarizing your dog with the snood. Covering the treat with the snood encourages your dog to insert its head into the snood to get the treat. Additionally, it allows you to observe your dog's reaction to having the snood over its head.

  • Once your dog comes forward and starts eating, gently unfold the snood over its head
  • By unfolding the snood over its head, you are giving your dog a chance to adjust to the feeling of the snood being on its head.

  • Hold the snood onto their head while your dog eats
  • This is an essential step because it allows you to ensure that the snood stays on your dog's head while they are eating. It also allows you to observe how your dog responds to having the snood on its head.

  • Next, let your dog remove the snood if it's uncomfortable
  • Doing this lets your dog have control over the situation. Ideally, you allow them to adjust to it at their own pace.

  • Repeat steps 1–7 for a few days
  • Repeating the steps for a few days helps your dog get used to the snood. You'll also give your dog a chance to become familiar with the snood and adjust to it.

Once your dog gets used to the idea of having something on its head, it may even start loving its Zoo Snood!

We’ve found that when dogs wear snoods, they get a big boost of confidence and feel more secure in their environment, which highlights the positive benefits of your dog wearing a snood.

Do you ever do custom Snoods? My Baby has aggressive cancer and has open sores and tumors on the side of his head and neck. I have often thought a snood might help, but worry about the knit being too uncomfortable on his skin irritations. Let me know if you have ever or would ever do a custom snood.

    Thank you!!
